Viewfinder: Earth Day at Brookside Middle School

On Thursday students from Brookside Middle School got a hands-on lesson about the environment and earth sustainability.

On Thursday, hundreds of students at Brookside Middle School celebrated Earth Day by doing hands-on activities.

They played trash bag races, threw balls into rain barrel buckets and even showered. There were multiple stations were students had to answer science questions before participating in each stations activity.

Christy Stackhouse, a sixth grade science teacher at Brookside, said this Earth Day Celebration at Brookside is in its third year and she thinks it is starting to make a difference.

"They really care," she said. "It's just part of their mentality built in now.

Stackhouse hopes what students have learned in school will filter into their lives back home. She thinks parents will begin to think, 'this is what kids are doing now this is what they care about," Stackhouse said. "Kids go home and talk to their parents about the little things they can do."
