A South Florida man remains behind bars days after Broward County deputies say he attempted to swipe a rather bulky assault rifle by shoving it down his pants.
It seems the man first selected an AK-47 out of a display at Public Pawn and Gun in Davie and attempted to shove it down his pants. Unhappy with the selection, surveillance video of the crime shows the man pulling the rifle back out, grabbing another one and then concealing it in the same manner. The man then attempted to limp out of the store with the ill-gotten gains.

That attempt to leave, however, was thwarted by shop owner Kevin Hughes, who wasn’t fooled by the limp, the Sun-Sentinel reported. Hughes tackled the man outside the store and was able to recover the weapon, valued at $830, before the man got away.
“By the time he left, I noticed a bulge in his pants, so I followed him out,” Hughes was quoted by NBC as saying. “I didn’t want to have an altercation in the store... too many customers and employees here.”

While the man got away after Hughes recovered the rifle, the getaway wasn’t entirely clean.
Deputies arrested Marlon Alvarez, 19, on May 26. He was initially charged with grand theft of a firearm, but has since had other charges added, according to Broward County Jail records. It seems possession of a firearm violated a domestic violence injunction. A judge revoked bond possibilities, as well, because of a prior arrest in May on theft and drug possession charges.
Alvarez remained in the Broward County Jail Tuesday pending trial.
