Watch: Mom Takes On Would-Be Carjackers
Three people ended up behind bars following the failed theft Monday night.
HIALEAH, FL — Three would-be carjackers found out the hard way Monday night that crime doesn’t pay, especially if the intended target happens to be a protective mother of two children.
The case in question unfolded at a Tom Thumb store in Hialeah Monday night as the mother was pumping gas into her car while the two children were safely in the back. Two men are seen on the store’s surveillance video rushing up to a vehicle next to the mother’s and attempting to take it. That victim managed to lock herself in and drive away.
With their first attempt thwarted, the men are seen on the video rushing to the mom’s car. One man got into the passenger seat while the other tried to climb into the driver’s side.

“She was a mom, and what that bad guy didn’t know, in the back seat of that car were two kids,” Hialeah Police Sgt. Carl Zogby told WSVN. “She wasn’t gonna let them be taken, so she fought, she dragged the guy out of the car, and they both ran away like cowards.”
Twice bitten, the two men jumped into a getaway car that was reportedly driven by Rebecca Utria, 21, according to CNN. A Hialeah police officer happened to spot the getaway car speeding away and began to follow.
Utria, Nicholas Rosado, 19, and a 17-year-old boy were brought into custody. Utria now faces fleeing and eluding charges and attempted carjacking charges. Rosado and the juvenile were both charged with attempted carjacking. Both Utria and Rosado remained in the Miami-Dade County Jail Thursday, according to jail records.
