WBTT to present free, family-friendly ‘Alligators & Flamingos’ show at The Bay
Performance by Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe – geared toward families with younger children – takes place at The Bay Sarasota on March 28

Not only does Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe aim to entertain theatre fans through productions in its Donelly (MainStage) and Howard J. Millman Black Box theatres, the arts organization also has several presentations specifically geared toward school-age children. WBTT’s Rhythm & Tales program comprises several age-appropriate shows that teach valuable lessons while offering area students – many of whom may not have regular access to arts experience – high-quality theatrical entertainment. These productions feature WBTT professional artists.
On Saturday, March 28 at 10:30 a.m., WBTT will again collaborate with The Bay Sarasota to present a free performance of one Rhythm & Tales show, “Alligators & Flamingos.” This show tells the story of Herbert, an alligator who wants ONLY alligators to be able to swim in Lodi Swamp, but Terry the flamingo doesn’t believe that’s fair. In this musical adventure, Terry and friends will teach Herbert and his friends a thing or two about acceptance.
The inspiration for this story is taken from Sarasota history: on October 3, 1955, 100 African American residents drove to Lido Beach in defiance of Jim Crow laws; additional caravans and “wade-ins” took place for several years in protest of beach segregation. It was a struggle but finally, after the Civil Rights Act of 1964, local facilities, restaurants and the beaches were fully integrated.

“The long-standing partnership between WBTT and The Bay brings high-quality, accessible performances to children of all ages — sparking laughter, dance, and song — and reflecting what it means to be 'One Park for All,’” said Diana Shaheen, Chief Operating Officer at The Bay.
WBTT has additional shows under the Rhythm & Tales umbrella, including “Brer Tiger and the Big Wind,” a child-friendly retelling of the William J. Faulkner classic tale, and “The Supercilious Seed,” which has lessons about kindness, understanding and doing the right thing. WBTT’s Rhythm & Tales shows have been performed at Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall for large groups of elementary-aged school children; WBTT will present “Alligators & Flamingoes” at Van Wezel on April 7.

“What is so beautiful about our Rhythm & Tales productions is that they entertain while teaching lessons that are so valuable for younger students,” said WBTT’s Assistant Artistic Director/Education Director Jim Weaver. “The students become so absorbed in the performances that they don’t even realize they’re learning! We hope area families will come and enjoy ‘Alligators & Flamingos’ at The Bay on March 28 – it will be a wonderful way to spend time together at a beautiful venue. And it’s free!”
