SARASOTA, FL — Many Sarasota workers and students get to enjoy a long weekend for Presidents Day, which is honored Monday.

The holiday was established in 1885 to recognize the birthday of President George Washington, according to History.com. It became known as Presidents Day in 1971 when Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act to create more three-day weekends for workers in the United States.

As a federal holiday, Presidents Day could affect the hours of government offices, libraries, public transportation, garbage pickup and other services in Sarasota County.

City of Sarasota Solid Waste Department: Trash and recycling collection services won’t be interrupted Monday.

Arlington Park and Aquatic Complex: Open Monday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Lido Pool: Closed Monday.

Nature Trails at Bobby Jones Golf Club: Closed for ongoing golf course renovations.

Payne Park Tennis Center: Open Monday, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Robert L. Taylor Community Complex: Open Monday, 6 to 10 a.m.

Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall: The box office will be open regular hours Monday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sarasota County Area Transit: Regular SCAT bus services and the Siesta Key Breeze will operate during normal hours on Monday. The administrative office will be closed.
