Hurricane Season is here and we're starting to get our first named storms. You should bookmark this site if you haven't already: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/. This is the National Hurricane Center. Tropical Cyclone Chris is petering out in the middle of the North Atlantic and the next storm in the list is forming off the Yucatan and tossing some moisture our way. NOAA gives it a 70% chance of forming into a tropical cyclone. Now is the time to take a long look at your emergency food stores and get them ready for the next five months.
What do you stock up on for weather emergencies?
We stock the vacuum-packed, foil pouches of Indian food that we purchase at Whole Foods. (I imagine Greenwise sells similar.) These things can be boiled right in the bag if you need to and have a lot of flavor. We purchase them in June and then consume them over the Winter if they're still around. I also store the large "juice" boxes of almond milk. (Soy works too.) I get them from Publix and Whole Foods. These can keep for a long time and are great with cereal, coffee, and as a base for chocolate milk. They're small enough that they fit into ice chests after opened or can be consumed pretty quickly by a small family with a big box of cereal. (Peanut Butter Crunch is the best Hurricane food, I say!) You may not be able to light a fire and boil water for a few days so a box of protein bars and fruit roll-ups aren't bad for getting by. And I always have a large amount of bottled water ready for when even boiling the tap water isn't recommended.
