Protestors to 'Occupy the Courts' in Tampa?

Protests are planned today in more than 100 cities, including downtown Tampa. Attendees hope to draw attention to the two-year anniversary of a landmark Supreme Court decision they say enhanced "corporate rule."

The Occupy Wall Street movement has its eye on the courts today.

Protests are planned in more than 100 cities to “Occupy the Courts,” including one from 3-6 p.m. today in Tampa at the Sam M. Gibbons U.S. Courthouse, 801 N Florida Ave., according to Move to Amend Tampa Bay. Protesters will gather in opposition of the two-year anniversary of the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission decision, a Supreme Court ruling that removed spending limits in political campaigns by corporations and labor unions.

They believe the Supreme Court decision allows businesses to essentially buy elections.

Inspired by Occupy Wall Street, this new movement called Move to Amend maintains the judiciary has “created – and continues to expand – corporate personhood rights,” according to the group's Meetup.com page.

“Americans across the country are on the march, and they are marching OUR way. They carry signs that say, “Corporations are NOT people! Money is NOT Speech!” the website reads.
