2 Teens Charged In Illegal Drag Race That Killed 16-Year-Old In Tampa

Tampa police say they have arrested the teens involved in an illegal street race on Adamo Drive in which they drove at nearly 120 mph.

TAMPA, FL — Two teenagers have been arrested in connection with the death of a 16-year-old in the early morning hours of July 24.

After an exhaustive investigation, Tampa police say they have arrested the teens involved
in an illegal street race on Adamo Drive near 50th Street in which the teens raced at speeds approaching 120 miles per hour, resulting in a crash that killed a teen.

According to the Tampa police report, 17-year-old Austin Lewis and 19-year-old Kristopher Trenker were racing east on Adamo Drive when another vehicle entered the path of Lewis' Kia Sorrento SX.

Tampa police said Lewis swerved to avoid striking the other vehicle, entered the median, struck a cement culvert and became airborne. The vehicle then rolled over several times.

A 16-year-old in the rear passenger seat of Lewis's vehicle was partially thrown out of the vehicle during the crash. He died at the scene.

Tampa police took a blood sample from Lewis that showed his blood-alcohol level was .08, Florida's limit to be declared legally intoxicated.

On Aug. 10, Lewis was arrested and charged with DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide. Trenker was charged with vehicular homicide, operating an unregistered vehicle (an Infiniti G35) and driving while his license was revoked.
