5 Ways to Care for Your Skin in the Cold

Don't let the Florida climate fool you. When the weather is cold, you still need to care for your skin.

Florida may be commonly referred to as the “sunshine state”, but that doesn’t mean we don’t get our share of cold fronts. Fortunately, for folks in Florida, these dramatic drops in temperature are typically temporary. The downside to this is that sudden climate changes, which are so frequently felt, can have seriously negative effects on your skin. Not even Florida’s notoriously high levels of humidity can save your skin from cold weather damage.

It does not matter if your skin is fair and sensitive, oily and prone to breakouts, or just extremely dry. Everybody and all skin types are affected when bursts of cold weather blow in. The good news is that you can help your skin fight off the damaging effects of low temperatures, dry air, and unfriendly winds.

To assist you through the dreary winter months, apply the tips below to your regular skin care routine.

1. Healthy Hydration – Drinking an optimal amount of water everyday is an essential component of so many health matters, and skin care is no exception. When it’s cold outside, you are less likely to perspire and feel thirsty. Make sure you stay hydrated, even if your body isn’t craving water.

2. Maximize Moisture – Moisturizing is already a part of most skin care regimens but during the winter months, you need to amp it up. Hands and lips are the most susceptible areas so keep a moisturizing lip balm and hand cream easily accessible throughout the day to prevent uncomfortable cracking and unsightly chapped lips. Wear gloves if you are going to be outdoors for a significant amount of time. Switch to a more emollient moisturizer if necessary, or simply increase the number of applications to ensure moisture stays locked in.

3. Extra Exfoliation – Excessively dry skin caused by cold weather needs to be rid of because you don’t want dead skin cells lingering on your face. Frequent but gentle exfoliation will effectively restore your skin’s texture and tone. Again, it is absolutely essential that you are gentle when exfoliating to prevent further damage.

4. Remember Rays – Even if you aren’t heading to the beach to intentionally soak up some rays, the sun is still harmful on your skin when it’s cold and cloudy. If you’re going to be outdoors for extended periods of time, you still need sun protection. Choose a product with SPF 30.

5. Finishing Facial – Finally, when the last of the cold days have come and gone, nothing can work wonders on your skin like a therapeutic facial.
