Dog Dies After Cruelty Case; More Charges Possible For Tampa Woman: Sheriff

TAMPA, FL — A dog injured in an animal cruelty case in Hillsborough County last month later died after emergency treatment, authorities said.

Detectives are now working with prosecutors to determine whether additional charges will be filed against a Tampa woman already arrested in the case, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Wednesday.

The HCSO Real Time Crime Center cameras observed Imania Davis, 33, throwing a dog twice, causing the animal to hit the asphalt, on April 30, around 8:20 p.m., the agency said. The video also showed Davis kicking the dog.

Deputies responded and took the dog to a veterinarian, where he was treated for a broken leg and received emergency medical care.

Despite ongoing efforts from the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center and its veterinary staff, the dog later died, the agency reported.

Davis was previously arrested on six charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives are working with the state attorney’s office regarding any additional charges that may apply following the dog’s death.

“This is a deeply upsetting case that has impacted our entire community,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said. “What this innocent animal endured was cruel, violent, and unacceptable. I am also grateful to everyone at the Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center and the veterinary staff who did everything they could to care for this dog and give him a chance to recover."
