Possible Plane Crash A False Alarm Near Tampa: Sheriff's Office

A reported plane in distress turned out to be an aerobatic aircraft performing maneuvers, the sheriff's office said.

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — A possible plane crash in the Tampa area turned out to be a false alarm Tuesday evening, according to law enforcement.

Emergency personnel received a call around 7:40 p.m. about a potential plane in distress in the Gibsonton area near Interstate 75, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

"Deputies immediately responded and began searching the area for a possible plane crash," sheriff's office Public Relations Coordinator Carolina Montelongo informed Patch in an email.

"Through investigative means, deputies determined that the aircraft was an aerobatic plane performing aerial maneuvers. Deputies confirmed there was no crash, emergency landing, or aircraft in distress."
