‘FL Super Soaker’: Stormy Weather, Heat Expected This Weekend

Forecasters are calling for heavy rains and thunderstorms with the potential for flooding across parts of FL.

It might be a quiet hurricane season so far, but that's not stopping the wet weather from ramping up across much of the state.

A surge of tropical moisture is moving across the Southeast and mid-Atlantic this weekend, bringing threats of flooding to states in these regions, AccuWeather said.

Residents and visitors of the Sunshine State should expect a "Florida Super Soaker" over the next 10 days, meteorologist Matt Devitt wrote in a social media post.

Daily thunderstorms are expected in West Central and Southwest Florida this weekend into early next week, and the downpours will be heavy at times, the National Weather Service's Tampa Bay office said.

"Scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms will develop each day through the weekend, with the highest rain chances generally in the afternoon. Storm coverage and rain totals are expected to increase early next week, with heavy rain and flooding possible," NWS forecasters said.

This wet weather pattern is caused by "extra tropical moisture and a stalled out front," Devitt wrote in his post.

He added, "Greatest amounts will be in the Panhandle and Northern Florida. Not everyone gets the biggest totals, but some isolated, hardest hit spots, could see 10"+ after it's all said and done."

Fox 35 meteorologist Noah Bergren wrote in a social media post that "summer like moisture and heat" are returning to Central Florida this weekend.

Bergren wrote that the "heat index will peak around or just over 100 degrees later this week. Showers and storms will return as well... but the best coverage of rain and storms will be on the western side of the state."

In a social media post, Denis Phillips, chief meteorologist for Tampa Bay 28, wrote that Floridians should get used to this type of weather.

"We've been saying it since January. El Niño will bring lots of rain to Florida this Fall and Winter," he wrote, adding that a "stalled out front [will sit] over the state for 5 or 6 days next week. Get used to seeing this into Spring."

Fox 13's Paul Delegatto agrees that this weekend's weather, with rain totals of more than 6 inches in some areas, is "a sign of things to come this winter."

Here's the weekend weather forecast for different regions from the National Weather Service:

Orlando

Jacksonville
