TAMPA BAY, FL — Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady and supermodel wife Gisele Bündchen are divorced after 13 years of marriage, Brady confirmed in an Instagram post Friday.

Brady, a seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback who used to play for the New England Patriots, and Bündchen, a Brazilian fashion model, married in 2009. The couple have two children, 12-year-old son Benjamin and 9-year-old daughter Vivian.

"We arrived at this decision amicably and with gratitude," Brady shared on Instagram Stories. "We are blessed with beautiful and wonderful children who continue to be the center of our world in every way."

News of the divorce came three weeks after both hired divorce lawyers amid rumors that Brady's decision not to retire from football caused tension within their marriage. The couple, who currently reside in Tampa, had been living separately for months.

In January, Brady announced he would retire from professional football after becoming the all-time leader in nearly every major passing category, winning three NFL MVPs and five Super Bowl MVPs. Brady led the Patriots to six Super Bowl titles, and then won the title for the Bucs in Super Bowl LV in 2021.

Before making the retirement announcement, Brady said he was looking forward to spending more time with his family and that his family would play a central role in his decision to play another season or retire.

Six weeks later, Brady changed his mind. In March, he announced on Twitter that he would return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the 2022 season.

Despite his return, the Bucs have struggled this season. On Thursday, the team dropped their third straight game in a 27-22 loss to the Baltimore Ravens, bringing the Bucs to an overall 3-5 record.

In a September interview published in Elle magazine, Bündchen said she was "concerned" about her husband's return to football.

"Obviously, I have my concerns," she told the magazine. "This is a very violent sport, and I have my children and I would like him to be more present. I have definitely had those conversations with him over and over again. But ultimately, I feel that everybody has to make a decision that works for [them]. He needs to follow his joy, too."

On Instagram, Brady said he and Bündchen made the decision to divorce after "much consideration."

"Doing so is, of course, painful and difficult," Brady said. "However, we wish only the best for each other as we pursue whatever new chapters in our lives that have yet to be written."
