Preview Concert: "A Celebration of the Life and Music of Robert Helps"

Four University of South Florida music professors will offer a special preview of their upcoming Carnegie Hall performance, "A Celebration of the Life and Music of Robert Helps" at the University of South Florida's School of Music Concert Hall on October 23, 2011.

Robert Helps was a renowned modern composer and pianist who lived and taught in Tampa. His career took him to the nation's top conservatories including the San Francisco Conservatory, the New England Conservatory and the Manhattan School of Music. He joined the staff of the University of South Florida in 1980. This concert marks the 10th anniversary of his death.

The program will include several of Helps' well-known and loved pieces such as "Hommage a Faure", "Saccade" and "Eventually the Carousel Begins". It will also feature some of his unpublished works including "Fantasy" for violin and piano, "Postcards" and "Duo" for cello and piano.

The performing ensemble includes Svetozar Ivanov, head of the USF piano department, Scott Kluksdahl professor of violoncello, Carolyn Stuart associate professor of violin and Dharshini Tambiah professor of piano, all faculty from the University of South Florida's School of Music.

Tickets for the group's performance at the Weill Recital hall at Carnegie Hall in New York on November 3, 2011 go on sale September 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.

The local preview of that performance will take place October 23, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. at the University of South Florida's School of Music Concert Hall. Tickets are $8-15.
