Facelift Coming for Lowry Park Zoo's Wallaroo Station

The work is expected to take about two months and will require closing of most of the attraction.

Fans of Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo will have to say goodbye to Wallaroo Station, but not for too long.

The popular children’s attraction is closing down for the better part of two months for a huge makeover, zoo spokeswoman Rachel Nelson said.

“When Wallaroo re-opens this spring, guests can expect the Australian area to be more ‘Auss-ome’ than before with upgrades to The Billabong splash ground with new water features, a redesigned restaurant and dining area with additional seating and increased shade, new midway games and activities, and new amenities like a nursing mothers area,” she wrote in a media release.

The 4.5-acre Australian-themed attraction is designed especially for kids. It debuted in 2002, offerings hands-on, family friendly activities, complete with a petting zoo area. It also features such critters as koala, wallabies, emu, flying fox bats and cockatoos. Four children’s rides, including the Tasmanian Tiger family roller coaster, are found in this part of the park.

The upcoming work is the first significant remodel of the area since its opening.
