Five things homeowners should know about termite control

March 13 – 19 is Termite Awareness Week

March 13 – 19 is national termite awareness week, and to celebrate, leading pest control company Arrow Environmental Service is sharing insight on one of Florida’s most hated pests.

“There’s a lot that homeowners don’t know about termites,” said Paul Goodman, general manager of Arrow Environmental Services, a leader in sustainable pest and lawn services around the Southeast. “With the prevalence of this pest in Florida’s wet climate and the damage termites can do, it’s important that people familiarize themselves with the treatment and prevention options. It could end up saving their home.”

1. No insurance company in the U.S. provides coverage for termite damage. Homeowners insurance does not cover damage caused by termite infestations. Most insurance companies believe that termites are preventable, which means that your insurer will consider the damage a maintenance issue.

2. During the swarm season, termite colonies will begin to grow. During months where weather is warmer at night and typically after some rain, termites will leave their colonies to look for a mate and begin a new colony. This is known as the swarm season. If you have a termite problem, it may get worse during these months as colonies begin to multiply.

3. The soil around your home can be treated to prevent a termite infestation. The best way to prevent termites from damaging your home is to have bait stations placed around the perimeter of your home and have the soil treated around the foundation. An experienced professional pest management company can provide preventative and curative solutions for termite infestations.

4. Signs of termites may be right under your nose. The best way to prevent termites from damaging your home is to have bait stations placed around the perimeter of your home and have the soil treated around the foundation. An experienced professional pest management company can provide preventative and curative solutions for termite infestations.

5. You should have your home inspected for termites once a year. There are several signs of termites that homeowners can look for, including swarms in or around their home, dead termites or wings piling up around windowsills, wood shavings and pellets on the floor, and mud tunnels in drywall.

Often, evidence of a termite infestation is not apparent until the damage to your home is already extensive. To catch the problem early, have your home inspected by a trained professional once a year. Companies can look for signs of damage and also assess the susceptibility of your home to an infestation.

If it’s been more than a year since your last termite inspection, companies like Arrow can provide a complementary comprehensive review and assessment of your home. For more information, visit http://www.arrowservices.com.
