Halfacre Construction Completes Phase Two of Parking Lot Project at Punta Gorda Airport

To make way for a major terminal expansion, Halfacre Construction Company has completed two of three phases of a parking lot expansion project at the Punta Gorda Airport in Charlotte County. 

Since 2004 when Hurricane Charley destroyed much of the airport, Halfacre Construction has helped to rebuild and renovate a great deal of the large and growing site. The airport has grown steadily over the past few years with increased carriers and flights causing a need for more space. In the next 18-24 months, the terminal will be expanded from 16,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet to accommodate its growth.

“When we first started working on the airport, we realized quickly that we wanted to be a long term partner with them to help accommodate future growth,” said Andy Stultz, vice-president of construction at the Lakewood Ranch based commercial construction firm. “We have an office onsite at the airport for our Charlotte County clients and we hope to help with the continued airport expansion foryears to come. It’s a great economic driver for this region,” said Stultz.

The first of the three phases of the parking lot project consisted of reconfiguring the entrance into the terminal to improve accessibility, which was finished earlier thisyear. The second phase, completed this week was the expansion of the rental car lot from 40 to 177 spaces.

Halfacre will begin the third phase in the next 60 days, which will expand the long-term parking lot from 700 spaces to almost 1,000 spaces.

“With the addition of Allegiant Air and other big name carriers expected, we were in dire need of parking lot expansion,” said James Parish, Punta Gorda Airport Assistant Executive Director. “I’ve been in this business for 25 years, and I’ve rarely used a contractor twice; however, Halfacre Construction is the exception. “The company is adaptive, they’re flexible and they’re competitive. Other worked already completed by Halfacre Construction includes the new terminal built in 2007, the new administration building, the 132 foot tall air traffic control tower built in 2011 and the construction of Cheney Road which connects Piper Rd to Innovation Way and in addition to the 15 mile road widening of Bermont Road for Charlotte County.  Halfacre Construction has also been selected by Charlotte County as the Construction Manager at Risk for the $24M Gasparilla Road Improvements project.
