Hillsborough Commissioners Honor Ousted School Superintendent

MaryEllen Elia received a commendation for being named the Florida superintendent of the year.

Just two days after the Hillsborough County School Board voted to oust Superintendent MaryEllen Elia, the Hillsborough County Commission honored her work.

School board members voted 4-3 Tuesday to end Elia’s contract, a move that will reportedly cost the district more than $1 million.

On Thursday, however, county commissioners took time out of their morning agenda to recognize Elia’s attainment of Florida Superintendent of the Year honors, The Tampa Tribune reported. The award was based on a vote of peers across the state. The commission’s recognition of Elia planned before the school board decided to terminate her contract, the paper noted.
