Tampa Bay Hospitals Graded On Safety

TAMPA, FL — The Leapfrog Group has released its Spring 2016 Hospital Safety Score update. The twice annual report grades more than 2,500 hospitals across America based on such factors as medical errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

In Florida, the Washington, D.C.-based Leapfrog Group graded a total of 168 hospitals. While no Tampa Bay area hospitals received a failing grade, several of the region’s bigger medical centers received D grades, including Tampa General and Bayfront Health.

“The Hospital Safety Score uses national performance measures from the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the American Hospital Association’s Annual Survey and Health Information Technology Supplement,” the organization explained on its website.

Leapfrog estimates that choosing the “right hospital can reduce your risk of avoidable death by 50 percent.” In announcing the spring report, the group asserted that “despite considerable improvement in the safety of hospital care since the Score’s launch in 2012, avoidable deaths remain high. Findings point to a 9% higher risk of avoidable death in B hospitals, 35% higher in C hospitals, and 50% higher in D and F hospitals, than in A hospitals.”
