Incumbents Dominate Tampa City Elections

Election Day in the city of Tampa brought no real changes to the face of local government.

Incumbents mainly took the night with Mayor Bob Buckhorn crushing the competition and councilmembers Mike Suarez, Charlie Miranda, Yvonne Yolie Capin and Harry Cohen all winning their races. In the contested District 6 race, it appears that Jackie Toledo and Guido Maniscalco will be headed for a March 24 runoff since neither captured 50 percent of the vote.

The unofficial election results, according to the Hillsborough County Supervisor of Election’s Office at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday, are as follows with 92 of 93 precincts completely reported:

Mayor

• Bob Buckhorn, 24,227 votes or 95.91%
• Write-In, 1.033 votes or 4.09%

District I

• Mike Suarez, 15,200 votes or 62.01%
• Susan Long, 9.314 votes or 37.99%

District 2

• Charlie Miranda, 15,020 votes or 58.97%
• Julie Jenkins, 8.139 votes or 31.95%
• Joseph V. Citro, 2,312 votes or 9.08%

District 3

• Yvonne Yolie Capin, 17,861 votes or 73.2%
• Paul Stephen Erni, 6,540 votes or 26.8%

District 4

• Harry Cohen, 6,822 votes or 71.24%
• Kent King, 2,754 votes or 28.76%

District 6

• Jackie Toledo, 3,681 votes or 46.06%
• Guido Maniscalco, 2,321 votes or 29.04%
• Tommy Castellano, 1,990 votes or 24.9%

Of Tampa’s 211,158 registered voters, 26,569 cast ballots in Tuesday’s election for a turnout of 12.58 percent, according to the supervisor’s office. Candidates for the city’s District 5 and 7 seats ran unopposed.
