TAMPA, FL — Tampa native and longtime relationship coach Matthew P. Hoffman is sharing his advice on how to have a fulfilling relationship in his first book, "Kickass Husband: Winning at Life, Marriage & Sex."

Hoffman said the book, along with his Kickass Couples Podcast and Kickass Couples Nation membership-based platform, is a handbook for imperfect husbands who want to create happy and fulfilling relationships with their spouses.

Widely regarded as an authority on relationships, Hoffman specializes in teaching men and women how to become rock-star partners who put their spouses first by prioritizing and investing in them each day.

With real-life anecdotes from his 27-year marriage to his wife Kim, as well as analyses from certified Gottman marriage therapist, Chris Cambas, Hoffman said the book provides tools, strategies and real-life examples.

"Relationships of all kinds, whether personal or professional, have their ups and downs. Struggles and challenges are part of a fulfilling relationship," Hoffman said. "Marriage is one imperfect person who has agreed to always love another imperfect person-no matter what. There’s no Plan B in relationships. This is our journey for life, come what may, and we are committed to the person and the process to keep making it work."

Through his webinar and new book, Hoffman emphasized the need for awareness and skills in what he calls "the three C's," — commitment, communication and conflict resolution.

“Deep, abiding commitment forms the roots that allow your relationship to grow and remain strong," he said. “Commitment is the safety net under your high-flying, trapeze marriage that allows you to try and fail without losing your life. Like a trapeze artist with a net, when there’s commitment in the relationship, you are willing to take risks and put yourself out there in an effort to achieve more because you know that if you make a mistake, it will not be life (relationship) ending."

He believes a successful relationship also depends on your ability to support one another, to think in terms of "we" instead of "me."

“Live your life in a way that causes your spouse to win," Hoffman said. "Live in a way that always results in win-win for you and your spouse instead of just one person in the relationship."

Hoffman has a long history of community service in Tampa Bay, and he's continuing that service by donating all the book's proceeds to the MK Hoffman Family Foundation that supports children’s education, counseling for low-income couples and worthy religious institutions.

At age 13, Hoffman held a shovel in his hand and helped his parents, Marcia and Al Hoffman, the founders of Ruth Eckerd Hall, break ground on the cultural arts center in Clearwater.

He went on to follow in his father’s footsteps, serving on both Ruth Eckerd Hall’s foundation and operating boards, eventually leading as chairman of the board of directors in 2008.

While on the board, he championed the Ruth Eckerd Hall’s arts education initiative and worked with then-director of the Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts Institute, Joyce Benomini Wehner, to help impact thousands of youth through the institute's on-site and traveling programs.

Hoffman continued his love of education and development by co-authoring and founding Character GPS, a seven-week, foundational training curriculum that teaches middle school and high school students the skills of good character.

Today, Hoffman’s focus has turned to relationships and how to make marriage more fulfilling and meaningful. He's assembled a team of certified therapists who conduct bi-monthly, live webinars and training sessions on investing in and strengthening relationships.

The Hoffmans share practical examples of the principles through a weekly video series called “TGWM” (Thank God We’re Married) and on the Kickass Couples Podcast.

On the podcast, they interview other couples from all walks of life and backgrounds, discussing the key points of relationship success. These real-life stories demonstrate how each couple has brought their varied backgrounds together and navigated the often-rough waters of marriage and relationships, ultimately building a union that can stand the test of time.

Hoffman is currently traveling across Florida through Nov. 12 in his Kickass Couples Nation Airstream trailer, the headquarters for his Kickass Couples Podcast, to publicize his book launch.

The official book launch party will take place Nov. 12 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at the Bryan Glazer Jewish Community Center, 522 N. Howard Ave., Tampa.
