L-I-U-G....Which Kitchen Layout Is Right For Your Home?

By Lana Bingham

Kitchens come in all different shapes and sizes. The needs of this room go far beyond cooking and cleaning – as many kitchens also serve as the command center for the entire home. Before thinking about cabinetry, countertop materials and appliances, it is important to figure out which kitchen shape is best for your home.

– The most popular kitchen layout for new homes in Tampa, this kitchen shape is made from two connecting walls and offers tons of counter space and storage options. Tampa new home builders recommend this type of kitchen in homes with a wide open floor plan, as it takes up more space than other layouts. The L-shape kitchen is also often characterized by a central island (or double island), which adds additional space for prepping, cleaning and eating.

I – This single wall set-up (or galley layout) is typically adjacent to a dining or living area, and creates one open space, with no divider. This style of kitchen doesn’t provide a great deal of counter space, but what it lacks in storage it makes up for in simplicity and flexibility. Although there is no kitchen seating available with this layout, there is little foot traffic involved. Another option is a double galley, which typically has the cooking area on one side and the prep and cleaning area on the opposite side.

– Another well-liked layout choice, this kitchen style is highly efficient and is characterized by a peninsula attached to a perpendicular wall. The peninsula acts as a non-central island (offering additional storage, counter space and bar seating) but without the ability to walk around either side of it. This shape still offers an open layout, but defines kitchen space by providing a barrier between the living or dining areas. New home builders Tampa Florida can also add a built-in banquette on the non-kitchen side of the counter for extra seating.

G - We leave this shape for layouts that can't really be classified as L, U, or I. This type of kitchen leaves tons of room for prep, cleaning and storage space, as it typically has more than one island involved.
