Man Arrested After Shooting Person In Back In East Tampa: Sheriff

A 23-year-old convicted felon wanted for robbery was arrested after shooting another person in the back in Tampa, Hillsborough sheriff said.

TAMPA, FL — A 23-year-old man was arrested after shooting someone in the back and attempting to flee the scene on Monday afternoon in East Tampa, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

Deputies responded to reports of shots fired near the 6200 block of East Hillsborough Avenue, on a roadway leading into the Netpark business complex, just before 2 p.m.

Detectives determined the suspect, later identified as Timothy Carter III, fired at two people as they ran away on foot, the sheriff’s office said.

One of the individuals later arrived at a nearby hospital with a gunshot wound to the back. The injury wasn’t considered life-threatening.

Deputies located Carter nearby and arrested him. Investigators also recovered a firearm from a nearby trash can, the sheriff’s office said.

Carter was released from prison in May after serving time for carjacking with a firearm, according to HCSO.

Investigators also learned he had an active Tampa Police Department warrant issued Oct. 8 for robbery with a firearm and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

In addition to the warrant, Carter faces charges including attempted second-degree murder while wearing a mask, aggravated battery with a firearm, discharging a firearm in public while wearing a mask, two counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, robbery with a firearm and tampering with physical evidence.

“As a convicted felon, this individual has no business possessing a firearm,” Sheriff Chad Chronister said in a statement. “To then shoot someone in the back shows just how violent this criminal truly is."
