Memorial Day 2022 In Hillsborough County: Events Planned

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FL — Not to be confused with Veterans Day, a federal holiday that takes place Nov. 11 to honor all military veterans in the United States Armed Forces, Memorial Day is observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.

Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of summer.

Here are some ways to pay tribute to America's fallen service men and women:

Memorial Day Service

Families and friends are invited to American Legion U.S.S. Tampa Post 5, 3810 W Kennedy Blvd., Tampa, Monday at 11 a.m. Bring a flag to wave and register your memorial wreath in advance for the 95th annual everlasting ceremony to be part of the roll call.

If your group would like to place a remembrance wreath in the veterans’ ceremony, it may be registered at the registration table from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Monday. All branches of the military will be represented.

The program will include speakers and a vocal tribute. The raising of the flags to full staff will take place at noon.

For 100 years, the American Legion has been honoring the fallen with a Memorial Day Service. The event provides a venue for all ages to give thanks for the military’s sacrifices.

Memorial Day Program

Flags will be placed on hundreds of graves honoring Black men and women who died in military service Monday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at Rest Haven Memorial Park, 4615 E Hanna Ave., Tampa. A formal military program and refreshments will follow.

Memorial Day Ceremony

Meet at the Golden Star Families Memorial Monument off the Riverwalk to remember those who have given their lives in service to their country Monday from 11 to 11:30 a.m. at MacDill Park at the Riverwalk, 100 N Ashley Drive, Tampa. The event is hosted by CRISP (Commitment. Respect. Integrity. Service. Pride.)
