Miami Police Official Critical After Shooting Himself: Report

TAMPA, FL — Miami-Dade Police Director Freddy Ramirez is in critical condition after shooting himself after a domestic dispute in Tampa Sunday night, authorities said, according to NBC6 South Florida.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister said that Ramirez, 52, was involved in a domestic dispute at a Tampa hotel and hotel staff had asked him to leave before the shooting occurred, the outlet reported.

Multiple officials confirmed on Twitter Tuesday morning that Ramirez was critically injured. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement wrote that the incident involving Ramirez occurred on I-75 South of Tampa.

The Miami-Dade Police Department wrote in a tweet overnight Monday that Ramirez was undergoing surgery at that time.

Several Florida officials shared statements on Twitter after news broke of Ramirez's injury.

"To many of us he is not just a colleague, but a friend. Please keep Freddy & his family in your thoughts & prayers," Miami-Dade County Commission Chairman Oliver G. Gilbert III wrote.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava wrote in her own statement that "all that matters right now is his wellbeing and we continue to pray for his speedy recovery."

According to his biography on Miami-Dade County's website, Alfredo “Freddy” Ramirez III serves in a dual role under Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine-Cava’s administration as Director of the Miami-Dade Police Department and Chief of Safety and Emergency Response. He is responsible for the oversight of both the Miami-Dade Police Department and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.

"Director Ramirez’ top priorities continue to be keeping the community and his officers safe, arduously addressing gun violence, homicide reduction, building community engagement; thus, enhancing community relations, trust, and transparency, while emphasizing officer wellness," the biography said.
