On July 4th, the E. H. Steinberg building will be the new home of a night club, also named Steinberg, operated by Techyes and SXS Presents, two entertainment and promotion companies, co-owned and operated by Daniel Clark and Mitchell Blakemore.
Edward H. Steinberg was the owner of Steinberg’s Dry Goods, best known as a gathering place where goods, such as, needles, buttons, ribbons, non-perishable food items and apparel were exchanged, traded and bought. “We chose to keep the name, Steinberg, to honor the history of trading and gathering as a community,” said Daniel Alexander. Daniel further went on to say, “for us it will be a place to trade ideas, music and experiences. As a true testament to this, we included the merchant’s mark as part of our logo, to enforce the authenticity of our endeavor.”
It’s quite fitting that the club is opening on America’s Independence Day because independence is something that he knew about. “E. H. Steinberg played a significant role in helping Jose Marti who spoke around the United States about his personal struggle for Cuban Independence. Steinberg was an important supporter of Marti’s cause and in November 1892, introduced Marti to organizations within the Jewish community as a way to obtain funding for his movement. Steinberg was later honored with a reception attended by the Cuban leader. Due in part to their experiences with repressive governments in their native countries, Jews, especially those from Romania, sympathized with Cuban cigar workers and believed that they should receive fair benefits and wages.” Yael V. Greenberg-Pritzker, author of The Princes of Seventh Avenue: Ybor City‘s Jewish Merchants.
