Plant High Swimmer Dies Following Crash Saturday

TAMPA, FL — A 16-year-old boy has died following crash Saturday on South Davis Boulevard.

According to Tampa Police, Carlos Medina died Monday at Tampa General Hospital from injuries he sustained when he lost control of the vehicle he was driving.

According to police, Medina was following a carload of friends when he tried to pass them across double yellow lines. Police said he lost control of his Ford Mustang and crashed into a light pole.

A passenger in his car was uninjured.

A junior at Plant High School, Medina was a member of the Plant High swim team as well as the Greater Tampa Swim Association, a competitive swim organization in which Medina won championships in the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly. His mother, Odeime Medina, was a coach for the association.

Medina was the oldest of her three children.
