Tampa's Oldest Conservative Jewish Congregation Marked by Plaque
Congregation Rodeph Sholom has served Tampa's Jewish community since 1903.
Founded in 1903 at the home of J. L. Mairson, the Congregation Rodeph Sholom is Tampa's oldest Conservative Jewish congregation. The congregation began with 20 families and the goal of serving the Jewish community.
Once located in a small building in Ybor City, Rodeph Sholom has moved several times to accommodate Tampa’s growing Jewish population. The congregation’s current synagogue was built in 1969 and is located on Bayshore Boulevard. It is easily recognized by its large seven-branched menorah. In 1994, an educational facility was added to the grounds, and in 2004 a plaque was erected to honor the congregation’s long history.
The congregation continues to serve the community through daily and High Holiday services, youth and family programs, community events and charity. Students in pre-kindergarten through seventh grade can attend the Religious School, which was established in 1918 to provide children a Jewish education. The synagogue also offers “In the Beginning,” a 21-session introduction to Judaism for those interested in learning about or refreshing their knowledge of the Jewish faith. Rodeph Sholom welcomes congregants and strangers alike, stating, “No matter where you come from or what you are seeking, you can find your place at Rodeph Sholom.”
