Doechii, a Tampa-born rapper, is one of only three women to ever win the Grammy for "Best Rap Album" after Sunday's awards ceremony.

LOS ANGELES, CA â Tampa native Doechii became just the third woman to win in the âBest Rap Albumâ category at Sunday nightâs 67th annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles for âAlligator Bites Never Heal.â
She beat out rappers J. Cole, Common and Pete Rock, Eminem, and Future and Metro Boomin to bring home the award.
âI don't want to make this long, but this category was introduced in 1989 and two women have won, Lauryn Hill,â she said during her acceptance speech, before pausing and correcting herself, âThree women have won â Lauryn Hill, Cardi B and Doechii.â (Watch a video of her speech here.)

The artist also gave a shoutout to her hometown during her speech.
âThereâs so many people out there who probably donât know who I am. I call myself the âSwamp Princessâ because Iâm from Tampa, Florida,â Doechii said. âThereâs so much culture in Tampa. Whenever people think about Florida, they only think about, like, Miami, but Tampa has so much talent. Labels, go to Tampa; thereâs so much talent there.â

The Blake High School graduate performed her songs âCatfishâ and âDenial Is a Riverâ during the award show.
Doechii was also nominated for âBest New Artist,â which she lost to Chappel Roan.
During her âBest Rap Albumâ acceptance speech, she shared an uplifting message for other Black women.
âI know that there is some Black girl out there, so many Black women out there that are watching me right now and I want to tell you, you can do it; anything is possible, anything is possible,â the rapper said. âDonât allow anybody to project any stereotypes on you that tell you that you canât be here, that youâre too dark or that youâre not smart enough or that youâre too dramatic or that youâre too loud. You are exactly who you need to be to be right where you are and I am a testimony. Praise God.â
