Updated: Orlando Shooting Victims' Names Released

Orlando Police have begun to release the names of the victims in Sunday's mass shooting at a nightclub.

Orlando, FL — About 14 hours after the mass shooting at the Pulse Orlando Night Club & Ultra Lounge left 50 dead and 53 injured, authorities began releasing the names of the victims who lost their lives in the shooting.

Edward Sotomayor Jr., 34, Stanley Almodovar III, 23, Luis Omar Oscasio-Capo, 20, and Juan Ramon Guerrero, 22, were the first four victims identified by police.

A few hours later, the city of Orlando released a few more names: Eric Ivan Ortiz-Rivera, 36, and Peter O. Gonzalez-Cruz, 22, Luis S. Vielma, 22. An eighth victim was identified as 37-year-old Kimberly Morris.

By Monday afternoon, all but four of the victims had been identified.

The names of other victims are being withheld until law enforcement can make proper identification and notify next of kin, officials have said.

President Barack Obama described the attack as "an act of terror and hate." The suspect reportedly swore allegiance to the head of the Islamic State in a call to authorities just prior to the attack.

The shooting took place at the popular gay bar while about 350 people were dancing and drinking. A state of emergency for Orange County has been declared by the City of Orlando and Florida Gov. Rick Scott.

The suspect, Omar Mir Seddique Mateen, was killed by law enforcement in an exchange of gunfire, according to Orlando Police Chief John Mina. Eleven officers involved in the shooting have been placed on leave. An Orlando police officer was shot during the exchange of bullets, but police say his Kevlar helmet saved him.

Family members who need to check on loved ones are being asked to call 407-264-4357. Anyone with information related to the shooting is asked to call the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI and select “option 2.”

A family information center has also been opened at the Hampton Inn at 43 Columbia St. in Orlando.

The city of Orlando is also in the process of creating a webpage related to the tragedy at www.cityoforlando.net/victims. The victims' names will be published on the page once next of kin notifications have been made.

The investigation into the shooting remained very much active Sunday afternoon.
