Nestled on Rattlesnake Point just off the Gandy Bridge in South Tampa lies the Salt Shack: a rustic-refined beach getaway featuring fresh seafood, seasonal cuisine and tropical cocktails. Visitors are welcome near and far, by boat or by car.
The Sunday we visited it was drizzling so the outdoor tables were not being seated. This hot new waterfront spot is drawing large crowds so we did have a 45 minute wait for a table. The restaurant is open air with no air conditioning but fans, breezes, rainfall and clouds kept temperatures at bay.

A TALE BEHIND THE LAND
During the early 20th century, Tampa’s Interbay peninsula was ridden with rattlesnakes, so much so that the land became known as Rattlesnake, Florida. in 1937, a Florida man named George End made an industry selling rattlesnake meat. He moved to an abandoned gas station just south of Gandy Boulevard and opened a canning plant for rattlesnake meat, coining the catchy appetizer name “SnakeSnaks.” George later added a novelty shop and bar, which was well attended by soldiers from MacDill Army Air Base during WWII. George passed in 1944, ironically by the one thing he based his life off of: a rattlesnake bite.

The fritter options change daily.

In the mood for seafood I opt for the fried oysters and they did not disappoint.

A tasty grouper sandwich is all ways a benchmark for a good seafood restaurant.

We did not save room for dessert which was a good thing as the menu did not offer any options.

For Tampa Bay boaters Salt Shack is a welcome addition to be able to dock and enjoy a meal. For those without boats it will make you feel like you got to experience the open water as you watch boats speed past.
