Second Tornado Confirmed In Tampa Bay Area: National Weather Service

Tornadoes touched down in Odessa and St. Petersburg during Tuesday's severe thunderstorms, the National Weather Service said.

ODESSA, FL — A second tornado produced by Tuesday’s powerful storm system has been confirmed in the Tampa Bay area, according to National Weather Service meteorologists.

An EF-0 briefly touched down near downtown St. Petersburg at 4:23 p.m.

The storm, which moved across the Gulf states Monday, also produced a series of tornadoes in the Panhandle, including a rare EF-3 tornado in Panama City, according to the Weather Channel.

A tornado's damage intensity is often rated on the Enhanced Fujita Scale, according to the NWS. Their rating is based on estimated wind speeds and related damage, with the lowest being an EF-0 with three-second gusts of 65 to 85 mph and the strongest being an EF-5 with gusts more than 200 mph.

The Tampa Bay-area’s second tornado from the storm was an EF-1 that touched down at 4 p.m. at The Eagles Golf Club in Odessa, NWS said.

The tornado, which had a maximum width of 75 yards and estimated peak winds of 90 miles per hour, traveled .61 miles.

Meteorologists also confirmed that a broad area of 75 miles per hour straight-line winds was recorded in Sarasota.
