Severe Weather Prompts Ground Stop At Tampa International Airport

A tornado watch remains in place for Hillsborough, Pasco and Pinellas counties in the Tampa Bay area until 6 p.m. Saturday.

TAMPA, FL — A ground stop is in place at Tampa International Airport as severe weather moves through the region on Saturday.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the ground stop went into effect around 11:30 a.m. The stop is set to expire at 6:30 p.m. with a medium probability of extension.

As of 4:30 p.m., more than 200 flights had experienced delays, according to flight tracking website FlightAware.com.

According to the National Weather Service, a band of showers and thunderstorms is expected to push across the Tampa Bay area Saturday afternoon and evening.

Additionally, there is a slight chance for severe thunderstorms across the Nature Coast and a marginal risk of severe weather across portions of west-central Florida.
