Sophie’s Closet will be hosting a donation drop-off event on January 12 from noon to 3 p.m. at Westchase Impact Martial Arts, located at 13038 Race Track Road. The event provides an opportunity for the community to support Sophie Farnan’s mission of offering free formalwear to students in need for school events like homecoming and prom.

The initiative, started by Farnan, a 17-year-old Sickles High School junior and student government officer, aims to ensure that all students, regardless of their financial situation, have access to the attire they need for these special occasions. Many students miss out on these memorable events simply because they can’t afford the high costs of formalwear. Sophie recognized this need and created Sophie’s Closet to help bridge that gap.

The donation drop-off event is part of an ongoing effort to collect gently used gowns, suits, shoes, and accessories that can be passed along to students who would otherwise struggle to afford them. Community members are encouraged to bring any formalwear they no longer use to the event and contribute to the cause. Donations will be sorted, organized, and made available to students, ensuring they can attend events feeling confident and proud in their attire.

Sophie’s Closet began as a simple idea but quickly grew into a successful initiative. After partnering with Eco Brothers Inc., a local nonprofit, Sophie launched the project at Sickles High School, receiving overwhelming support from the community. The first donation event saw over 125 students attending to select their homecoming outfits, and the response to the project has continued to grow.

With the 2025 prom season approaching, Sophie anticipates even more students will benefit from Sophie’s Closet. Volunteers will be needed to help manage the event, and Sophie hopes the initiative will continue as a regular student government program even after her graduation.
