Storms, Possible Severe Weather In Tampa Bay's Forecast

Some of the storms that move into the area over the weekend have the potential to become severe, forecasters say.

TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay area residents might want to keep an eye on the weather over the weekend. The National Weather Service says the area is in for a bumpy ride over the next few days.

Friday kicks things off with a 40 percent chance of showers during the daytime hours and a high around 80. Overnight, storm chances drop to about 20 percent in much of the region, but thunderstorms are also possible.

“Cool temperatures aloft and strong instability could lead to a few strong to severe thunderstorms,” forecasters warned in Friday’s Hazardous Weather Outlook report. Large hail, lightning and strong wind gusts are also possible. Friday’s overnight low is anticipated to drop to about 65 degrees in much of the region.

Storms are expected again on Saturday with a 50 percent chance in the daytime hours and about 30 percent overnight. Some of those storms may also be strong to severe, forecasters say. The day’s high should reach the low 80s with an overnight low around 60 anticipated. As the storms move through, small craft operators are also being warned to exercise caution on Tampa Bay area waters.

The weekend isn’t expected to be a total washout. Forecasters anticipate sunny conditions on Sunday with a high in the low 80s. The overnight low should fall into the upper 50s. Nice conditions are expected to stick around through the start of the workweek.
