Tampa Bay, FL — Tampa Bay area residents with big weekend plans may run into a thunderstorm or two along the way. Heat, however, is likely to be the biggest concern with forecasters anticipating heat index values to soar into the 100s over the next few days.

According to the National Weather Service, Friday kicks off the weekend with sunny conditions and an anticipated high near the mid-90s. The heat index values may climb to about 104 degrees in much of the region.

A 30 percent chance of thunderstorms moves into the picture starting in the early afternoon hours Friday. Those storm chances linger at 20 percent heading into the overnight hours. The low should only drop to the upper 70s overnight.

Saturday is expected to arrive with bright sunny conditions and a high in the low 90s. The heat index is again expected to break the 100-degree mark. Storms, however, are less likely to cool things off. Forecasters say there’s a 20 percent chance for isolated thunderstorms mainly after 3 p.m. Partly cloudy conditions and an overnight low in the upper 70s are expected Saturday.

While no organized serve weather is anticipated over the weekend, forecasters do warn thunderstorms that develop could bring locally heavy rains. Strong, gusty winds and lightning are also potential hazards.

The workweek is expected to kick off with a 30 percent chance of scattered thunderstorms and a high around 92 degrees on Monday.
