Tampa Named America's Best City for Retirees

The WalletHub study looked at such factors as quality of life, affordability and recreational activities.

When it comes to the best places in the country to retire, Tampa beats all-comers.

That’s according to a recent study conducted by WalletHub. The financial website’s staff looked at 150 of the country’s largest cities for its 2015 Best and Worst Cities to Retire report. Rankings were based on 24 metrics, including cost of living, healthcare, quality of life and access to recreational activities. When the numbers were crunched, Tampa came out with No. 1 honors.

Tampa scored high in such metrics as:

  • Adjusted cost of living – 25th
  • Number of recreation and senior centers per capita – 6th
  • Number of adult volunteer activities per capita – 19th
  • Number of home-care facilities per capita – 29th

The city did, however, take a few hits in rankings in such areas as:

  • Violent crime rate – 72nd
  • Annual cost of in-home services – 40th

  • Scottsdale, Ariz.
  • Boise, Idaho
  • Cape Coral
  • Orlando

St. Petersburg earned No. 11 rankings while Fort Lauderdale came in 40th and Miami 47th. Newark, N.J., came in dead last at 150th on the list. Jersey City was just behind it in 149th place.

Tampa also earned honors recently from Money magazine by being named one of America’s best big cities. The magazine, in fact, said it was the best of the best in the Southeast.
