TAMPA, FL — First responders saved a student who collapsed during track practice at Leto High School using an Automated External Defibrillator and CPR, according to a Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office news release. (Watch a video of the life-saving measures taken to save the student below.)

When a deputy responded to the Tampa high school on Feb. 5, the student, named Ansel, was already hooked up to an AED and had received an initial shock.

She performed CPR on the student until Hillsborough County Fire Rescue arrived and administered a second shock from the AED to them, the sheriff’s office said.

The student regained a pulse and was brought to St. Joseph’s Main Hospital.

The deputy’s “quick actions were nothing short of heroic," Sheriff Chad Chronister said. "In the face of a life-threatening situation, her swift response saved a young life. We couldn't be prouder of our deputies, whose training allows them to provide life-saving medical assistance when every second counts."
