TAMPA, FL — Following a high-speed car chase that ended when the driver crashed into a Hillsborough County Sheriff's vehicle, Tampa Police have arrested a man accused of taking part in two robberies.

At 4:09 p.m. Monday, police were notified that a stolen 2000 four-door Toyota Avalon had been spotted near East Waters Avenue near Interstate 275.

The stolen Avalon was believed to have been used in two robberies earlier in the day including the armed robbery of an Aldi grocery store on North Florida Avenue and a robbery outside a Dollar Tree on North 56th Street in Temple Terrace.

Tampa Police located the Avalon near North 10th Street and East Sligh Avenue, and attempted to pull it over. Instead, the driver fled the scene east on East Flora Street at a high rate of speed, and continued south on North Nebraska Avenue where it struck a Toyota Highlander and a Toyota Tacoma before continuing on, said police.

On North Tampa Street, just west of the interstate, the Avalon came to a crashing halt when it collided with an unmarked Chevy Suburban driven by an off-duty Hillsborough County Sheriff's colonel.

The driver of the stolen vehicle, Maurice Antonio Fryson, 43, of Tioga Avenue, Clearwater, was taken into custody and his bond was set at $15,500.

He's currently charged by Tampa Police with fleeing at a high speed to elude, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and resisting an officer without violence.

Temple Terrace Police have charged him with burglary of a vehicle with assault and robbery of less than $300.

As of Monday night, the sheriff's office hadn't yet filed charges.

No one was injured during the car chase.
