The shooting occurred around 12:30 a.m. Thursday with an estimated 300 to 400 students inside the library. The gunman shot three people, the Tallahassee Police Department, confirmed. Two of the wounded were taken to local hospital. A third was treated on the scene.
When police arrived at the library, the gunman was ordered to put down his weapon. He is said to have fired a shot instead. Police shot and killed the man, who has yet to be identified.
Authorities have confirmed that the three victims were FSU students. While their families have been notified, Tallahassee police have not yet released their identities.
A total of five officers from the Tallahassee and Florida State University police departments have been put on administrative leave pending an investigation into the gunman’s death.
Classes have been canceled for Thursday at FSU and the library is closed until further notice.
“The Florida State University community is extremely saddened by the shootings that took place early this morning at Strozier Library, in the very heart of campus, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of all those who have been affected,” John Thrasher, FSU president, said in a statement. “The three students who have been injured are our highest priority followed by the needs of our greater university community. We will do everything possible to assist with their recovery.”
