Find out what's in store for the Tampa Bay area as the weekend gets under way.

TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay area residents with big weekend plans are likely to find the weather most cooperative. Even so, steamy temperatures near 90 degrees and slight rain chances are also in the cards.

According to the National Weather Service, Friday will kick things off with sunny conditions and a high near 90 degrees in much of the region. Storm chances do creep into the picture in the afternoon hours. There’s about a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms after 2 p.m. The good news is those storm chances don’t stick around long.

Overnight Friday, partly cloudy conditions are expected with a low that should fall to only about 70 degrees in much of the region.

Rain isn’t expected on Sunday, but Monday brings with it a 20 percent chance of thunderstorms to start off the workweek. That day’s high will once again climb to the upper 80s with an overnight low in the 70s expected. Rain chances continue to climb as the workweek marches on with a 30 percent of storms forecast on Tuesday and a 50 percent chance on Wednesday. The good news, however, is that forecasters expect those storms to bring temperatures back down into the low 80s.

Forecasters don’t anticipate severe weather in the coming days, but do warn residents that thunderstorms that develop could produce locally heavy rain, strong winds and the potential for “frequent deadly lightning strikes.”
