TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay Food Tours visited Mighty Quinn's BBQ — Cooking the Old School Way to check out the newest barbecue chain to make its foray into Tampa.

To save you from looking it up, Bob Dylan penned the song, "The Mighty Quinn," which was a hit for Manfred Mann.

Located a few blocks north of Kennedy Boulevard at 202 N Dale Mabry Highway, the space features indoor and outdoor seated dining with counter service. Orders can also be placed online and picked up via the drive-thru window.

The menu features slow-smoked barbecue, sides, beer (no wine) and a few desserts. I saw a funny analogy that "Mighty Quinn's is the Chipotle of BBQ" and I do see the similarity.

We always like to try the signature items when available. The sweet corn fritters with a honey-chile dipping sauce had a dense consistency packed with flavor.

By our way of thinking, empanadas are a Tampa signature food item. Mighty Quinn's version offers a combo of two large empanadas filled with pulled pork and beans or brisket with bacon and a creamy dipping sauce.

We didn't love the nontraditional pastry texture of the crust, but the fillings and sauce were excellent.

Others online were raving about the four-cheese mac and cheese. It was rich and satisfying.

It was funny to find a standout dish of a veggie side (OK with bacon) and almonds. The broccoli salad was delicious, and I will definitely try to duplicate it.

The flavorful baked beans feature burnt-end brisket pieces, which we love as we always add meat to our beans.

You can opt to jazz up the generous sandwiches with pickled veggies and sandwiches come with a choice of creamy or a vinegar-based slaw.

There is the old saying (truth) that south Tampa residents will not go north of Kennedy. With established favorites Deviled Pig BBQ and Boozy Pig, this franchise has its work cut out to have better meat than down the street.

Hours are Monday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
