1 Killed in Pinellas Bayway Crash

The accident happened Thursday evening.

The St. Petersburg Police Department has released information related to the fatal crash along the Pinellas Bayway Thursday evening.

Police say Martin Frederick Mastriano, 27, was heading east on the Bayway around 7:25 p.m. Mastriano, police wrote in an email to media, was going at “a very high rate of speed” in his 2005 Chevrolet Corvette when he lost control and left the roadway. The car went through a drainage ditch and became airborne, police said.

“The vehicle traveling more than 50 years in the air before impacting the ground and tumbling to its final rest,” the email said.

Police say Mastriano was not wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the car. He was transported to Bayfront Health in serious condition. His passenger, Kyle Scott Matyac, 27, was belted in and was crushed when the vehicle rolled, the email said. Matyac was pronounced dead at the scene.

The wreck caused traffic along Sun Boulevard to be detoured for a time.
