10-Foot Great White Shark Tracked Near Tampa Bay Area: OCEARCH

Rose, a 600-pound juvenile great white shark, was tracked to the Gulf of Mexico not far from the greater Tampa Bay area, OCEARCH data shows.

TAMPA BAY, FL — A 10-foot, 5-inch-long great white shark weighing about 600 pounds has been tracked in the Gulf of Mexico not far from the greater Tampa Bay area, data from OCEARCH shows.

The global nonprofit organization researches and tracks ocean animals, including sharks, to collect data that could be used “to accelerate the ocean’s return to balance and abundance,” according to its website.

Rose, a juvenile great white shark, was initially tagged in October 2020 in Nova Scotia.

Her most recent ping on the OCEARCH map came Tuesday just before noon in the West Florida Escarpment, a 560-mile-long cliff under the Gulf that runs along the length of the peninsula.

She traveled to the same area off Florida’s west coast this time last year as well, data shows.
