3-Year-Old Struck in Hit-And-Run

A teenager is in custody.

A 14-year-old boy faces a number of charges after St. Petersburg Police say he took his mother’s van and accidentally struck a 3-year-old on a bicycle.

The incident began to unfold around 10:57 a.m. Tuesday at 630 28th Ave. S. According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, D’andre Bush Jr., 3, was out riding his bike by an alley, accompanied by his mother, when he was hit by a silver van.

The van’s driver stopped for a moment, but then took off when confronted by the mother, police wrote in an email to media.

Bush was taken to All Children’s Hospital where it was determined he only had abrasions. He was later released.

Officer found the van shortly after the accident at the registered owner’s address. After speaking with the owner, it was determined the woman’s son took her van without permission and drove it back home after the accident before taking off on foot.

The teenager, who is not being identified by Patch, returned home a short while later. Police took him into custody on leaving the scene of an accident involving injury and driving with no license charges.
