4-Year-Old Finds, Fires Loaded Gun

He reportedly found it while chasing a cat under his St. Petersburg home.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating an unusual discovery made Sunday afternoon.

According to the agency, a 4-year-old boy was playing outside with a cat around 5:15 p.m. when the feline took off under his home in the 1700 block of Yale Street South. The child followed the cat into the crawl space and happened upon a revolver with several rounds still inside.

When the child fired a shot into the ground, his mother and grandmother came out to investigate the noise. They called police, the agency wrote in an email to media.

The mother and grandmother, who are not being identified, are not gun owners. Police believe someone discarded or attempted to hide the unregistered revolver under their home.

The investigation continues.
