5 Things to Do for Earth Day

You can start by following the 3 "Rs": Reduce, reuse ad recycle. In addition to that, there are plenty of activities across the 'burg for helping, and promoting awareness of, the environment.

1.) Earth Day Is Deal Day: Some well-known retailers are jumping on the Earth Day bandwagon. Lowe's is giving away 1 million trees on April 23. Many Starbucks outlets will refill your reusable mug with brewed coffee or tea for free on Friday. However, don't expect Starbucks to switch to biodegradeable cups for the occasion, or anytime soon. With the popular coffee shop as ubiquitous as Walmart, just think about how many Starbucks paper and plastic cups and lids fill landfills around the Earth.

2.) Picnic for the Planet: Celebrate Earth Day with a Picnic for the Planet, on Earth Day, Friday April 22, beginning at noon, at Boyd Hill Nature Preserve. It's free, but everyone participating is being asked to bring their own food or, even better, coordinating to share a dish with others. This activity is sponsored by the Nature Conservancy and is not a Boyd Hill Preserve event. That's the same event you had listed. At the time I didn't know it was sponsored by the Nature Conservancy. For more information, go to http://www.meetup.com/NatureConservancy/Saint-Petersburg-FL/. Boyd Hill is located at 1101 Country Club Way S.

3.) Shake It Up: , a casual/fast restaurant with an earth-friendly attitude, will demonstrate its commitment to Earth Day by giving away free organic milkshakes in biodegradable cups all day on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. Evo's is located at 2631 4th St. N.

4.) Clean-Up: There will be a Grand Central Earth Day Clean-Up, starting at 2 p.m. on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. The first 100 volunteers will receive a baby pine tree. For more info or to sign-up, please call Ric Castro at 727-479-4228 or email riccastrosalon@gmail.com.

5.) Green Thumb Festival: It doesn't take place until after Earth Day, but the 25th annual , happening on April 30-May 1 at Walter Fuller Park, is definitely worth including in any Earth Day round-up. The festival celebrates Earth Day and Arbor Day, with environmental and horticultural exhibits, a flower show, entertainment, children's programs and many, many plant vendors. Walter Fuller Park is located at 7891 26th Ave N,
