66th Street North Improvements Focus of Upcoming Talk

St. Petersburg area residents who want to find out what’s in store for 66th Street North might want to attend a workshop set for Wednesday evening.

The Florida Department of Transportation plans to unveil its recommendations for improving the stretch of roadway between Pasadena Avenue and 30th Avenue North. That stretch of road has witnessed 209 crashes over a three-year period at the 19 median openings within the section, agency spokeswoman Kristen Carson said.

Details of the state’s recommendations to improve the roadway with an eye on making it safer will be revealed during the public meeting. That meeting takes place from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the St. Petersburg West Community Library, 6700 8th Ave. N.

“The FDOT Safety Office has identified several roadways throughout the Tampa Bay area that are experiencing high numbers of crashes at median openings,” Carson explained. It so happens that 66th Street North is one of those roads.

“We have been systematically studying these roadways to determine improvements that would enhance safety and traffic flow.”

While no formal presentation is planned during Wednesday’s meeting, residents will be able to visit stations that display aerial maps of the road and the suggested improvements, the city announced in an email to media. FDOT representatives will be available to answer questions and residents are encouraged to offer their input.

It is unclear how soon any of the improvements will be made.
