Update: 7-Vehicle Crash Closes Portion of 34th Street South

One person is dead.

The St. Petersburg Police Department is asking motorists to avoid the area surrounding the 3400 block of 38th Avenue South Monday afternoon.

According to the agency, a multi-vehicle crash has forced the closing. Police say the accident involves seven vehicles and there has been one fatality reported.

The agency initially reported that a child was ejected from a vehicle, but clarified just after 5:30 p.m. that the child had been removed from a vehicle before authorities arrived on the scene.

β€œ A bystander first on scene pulled the child out of the van and placed it by the side of the road when rescue arrived,” an email from the agency to media stated. β€œThat’s why it appeared at the time it was ejected.”

Police say 34th Street South is closed from 30th Avenue to 40th Avenue in both directions. It is unclear at this time how long the road will be closed.
