ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A homicide investigation is underway after a man was fatally shot early Saturday morning while breaking into an Historic Kenwood home, St. Petersburg police said.
Officers responding to reports of shots being fired in the 300 block of 2nd Avenue North around 12:20 a.m. found a 46-year-old man with a gunshot wound.
Before the shooting, the man crashed a car in the area and ran from the vehicle into the backyard of a nearby home, according to the preliminary investigation. Police said the reason for the crash is unknown.
The man then tried to break into the home through the back, investigators said.
Awakened by the man’s repeated attempts to enter the house, the homeowner ordered him to leave, but he continued trying to get inside.
The homeowner eventually fired shots at the man, striking him, police said.
The man’s identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
Three adults and a child were inside the home at the time of the shooting, police said.
At this point, the homeowner has not been charged. The investigation remains ongoing.
